COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Tulane men's and women's tennis teams will host the Wells Fargo Hurricane Katrina Tournament, Nov. 4-6 in College Station, Texas. This weekend's tournament will mark the first "home" competitions of the fall for both teams.
Displaced from the uptown New Orleans campus, the Tulane men's and women's tennis teams, along with four other Green Wave teams, have spent the fall semester headquartered at Texas A&M. Tulane teams have practiced and competed at Aggie facilities and are currently enrolled in classes at the university. All teams are anticipating a return to New Orleans for the spring semester, which starts on January 17, 2006.
The Green Wave programs will host the ITA sanctioned women's event at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the A&M campus while the men's open event will be played at Pebble Creek Country Club. The women's individual tournament, featuring teams from Texas A&M, Arizona, Stephen F. Austin, Lee College, Tyler Junior College, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Trinity, will have a singles and doubles draw with matches beginning at noon on Friday.
Eight men's tennis players from Tulane, team members from LSU and Tyler Junior College and several individuals will make up the men's draw, starting at noon.
The Tulane teams host events for the first time during the 2005-06 academic year after each squad won its third consecutive Conference USA title last spring. David Schumacher's women's team earned the highest ranking in school history when it checked in at No. 9 and advanced to its second straight Round of 16 at the NCAA Tournament before bowing out to Kentucky, 4-1. Robert Klein's men's team returns four all-conference players from last year's team that won a school-record 22 matches before falling to LSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
