RUSTON, La. -- Tulane junior punter Chris Beckman remains in a Ruston, Louisiana hospital following a hunting accident Sunday morning.
"We as a Tulane Family are praying hard for a special person," said Tulane Head Coach Chris Scelfo. "He is the epitome of a true student-athlete that has always represented his family and ours in a first-class manner."
The Tulane football team is headquartered at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston this semester while displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.
Beckman, a three-year starter at punter and a first team all-Conference USA choice last year, had returned to Ruston with the Tulane team from Houston, where the Green Wave played Rice Saturday. Sunday is an off day for the Tulane football team.
A native of Grenada, Miss., Beckman has punted 53 times for a 40.9-yard average in 2005. He had his season-long punt of 54 yards versus Rice. He ranks second all-time at Tulane in punting average (42.4), sixth in punting yardage (7,214) and seventh in punts (170).
Beckman's family has asked for their privacy at this time.
