COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior Jenny Kuehn won the singles title and joined forces with junior Erika Valdes to claim the doubles championship as the Tulane University women's tennis team rolled in the final day of the Wells Fargo/Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser Tournament Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.
The Green Wave co-hosted the Wells Fargo/Hurricane Katrina Fundraiser Tournament, along with Texas A&M, in an effort to raise funds for the Tulane Athletics Department. Among those in attendance during the weekend was former President of the United States, George H.W. Bush.
Kuehn defeated Valdes in the championship of singles play, 6-2, 6-2, and the pair combined to defeat Arizona's Kasia Jakowlew and Jessie Rochefort, 8-4 in doubles action. The Green Wave also won third-place finishes in singles and doubles action as rookie Joyce Ardies dumped Seva Iwinski of Texas A&M, 6-0, 6-1, and the combination of Ardies and Carina Bjornstrom teamed to defeat A&M's Iwinski and Tiffany Clifford, 8-6.
"I think this was a really a good learning weekend for this team," Tulane head coach David Schumacher said. "I think they learned more over the past three days then they have in the past three months.
"I'm happy with the progress we have made. Jenny played well, as the top-seeded player in the tournament should, but I think we played well overall. If we keep learning and working hard, we can have a very good year. A lot of that is going to depend on how much the team maintains the skills and conditioning we have worked on all offseason following the semester break."
Bjornstrom won the second-round consolation draw with a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Lee College's Jordan McCombs. The lone bump in the road for the Green Wave came in the doubles semifinals where Arizona's Jakowlew and Rochefort defeated Ardies and Bjornstrom, 8-4.
