NEW ORLEANS, La. - Welcome back. It's good to be writing again, especially when I get to write about four wins, and with one of them being against arch-rival LSU in Baton Rouge. I hope all of you guys are enjoying a great week, and getting ready for this weekend. I hear the weather for the Fullerton series this weekend is going to be awesome, and I know that the games are going to be even better.
First things first, let's take a look back at what happened. Last weekend, we took care of business by sweeping Marist in interesting fashion. I think the most intriguing thing about last weekend is that we won each of the three games in different ways. On Friday, we showed our ability to come back from a deficit with great bullpen pitching and very timely hitting. On Saturday, we flat out hit the ball. We collected season highs in hits and runs scored, despite not hitting any homers. On Sunday, however, we did it with the long ball, scoring early runs courtesy of three Green Wave homers and never looking back. The weekend was fun, but I think we all agree that the excitement of the sweep was immediately overcome by the anticipation for the Tuesday night game up the river in Baton Rouge.
I like the way the team played against the Tigers. For those of you who couldn't, or wouldn't I should say, get to the game at the Box, I'm sure you saw the large number of hostile Tiger fans in attendance at the ballpark by watching the Cox broadcast.
I love the way the team went in to a place that traditionally is one of the toughest places to play for an opposing team in college baseball and took care of business without thinking twice.Every time they thought they might have a shot at getting in the ballgame, we stepped up with a big two-out hit or defensive gem to shut them down, which was HUGE. Most importantly, we maintained our focus and didn't relax on a two- or three-run lead. Instead, we worked hard on extending it. With the two insurance runs we added in the eighth, it was a joy to see half the stadium start to empty out. It was a big road win for our team.
Immediately after the game, however, we put everything into perspective. We were excited about the win, but we also reinforced how our work wasn't over with Cal State Fullerton coming to town this weekend. The mental philosophy of our team is simple. Take the season one game at a time. Win or lose, the previous game is behind us and we focus on the next game. So, right away, we put the LSU win behind us and started to focus on the visiting Titans.
This weekend will be something incredible. I know that all the games are pretty close to selling out, if they haven't already. It could possibly be the most hyped regular-season home weekend in Tulane baseball history, and I can't wait to see you guys Friday night at Turchin to kick it off. Take care everybody. Until next time...
Roll Wave,
Tommy
