HOUSTON, Texas - The No. 20 Tulane women's tennis team claimed its third shutout of the season on Sunday with a 7-0 victory over Boise State in Houston. The win marks the fourth straight and the second in as many days for the Green Wave, which improves to 12-5 on the year.
Tulane's strong doubles play set the tone for the afternoon as the Green Wave recorded victories on all three courts. At No.1, the nation's No. 37 duo of Maria and Darya Ivanov defeated Ayling and Biorkman, 8-5, while Nancy Kockott teamed with Julie Smekodub for the win at No. 2 and Dorottya Magas and Ana Saaibi posted an 8-3 win on court three.
Senior Maria Ivanov met Ayling in singles play as well, posting a convincing 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 1. At the second spot, Smekodub, ranked No. 97, fought off Biorkman in the first set 7-6, and cruised to a 6-3 second set victory to claim the match.
After recording a 6-4 triumph in her first set, No. 60 Kockott dropped her second at No. 3 against Nadja Woschek, 6-7, before prevailing with a 10-5 super-tiebreaker set. Darya Ivanov improved her mark to 10-4 on the spring with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court four while fellow sophomore Magas extended her winning streak to 10 matches with a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 5. At No. 6, Saaibi defeated the Bronco's Stacey Housley, 6-0, 6-3, for her eighth win of the season.
"I was pleased with our doubles play today," head coach David Schumacher said. "Maria Ivanov also played an outstanding singles match. Boise State is a good team, they played a very close match (4-3) against (No. 29) Rice on Friday."
Tulane travels to Conference USA foe South Florida for a 12 p.m. (CST)match on Wednesday, March 23. The Green Wave returns to Goldring Tennis Center on April 13, hosting LSU at 5 p.m.
