NEW ORLEANS, La. - This Thursday, April 14th, marks Tulane University's annual "Shadow a Student-Athlete Day" from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Uptown campus. Green Wave student-athletes representing each of Tulane's 16 sports will pair up with 80 fifth, sixth and seventh-graders from Lafayette Elementary School for a community service event that is popular with both the youngsters and the student-athletes as well.
"I am looking forward to having a `shadow,'" Amanda Williams of the Tulane swimming and diving team said. "I couldn't do it last year, but it seemed like a lot of fun. And the kids all had a good time, too."
The elementary students arrive at the Wilson Center to be paired with an assigned student-athlete. After a short introduction, the pair sets off for the day - whether attending class, practicing, working out in the weight room, stopping by the dorms, or eating at Bruff Commons.
Williams, who has participated in various community service programs with school children in New Orleans, and her `shadow' have class, a scavenger hunt and lunch on their agendas for the morning.
"Shadow a Student-Athlete Day" is coordinated by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) in conjunction with Tulane's "For the Children" Community Outreach Program where Green Wave student-athletes visit the schools and participate in activities such as reading and recess with the students. SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of Tulane's 16 sports programs that provide insight on the student-athlete experience and offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect their lives. They also give back to the greater New Orleans community through numerous community service activities.
