SEATTLE, Wash. - Sophomore Dorottya Magas extended her singles winning streak to 11 matches and paired with Nancy Kockott to win at No. 3 doubles as the No. 21 Tulane women's tennis team upended No. 19 Washington, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Seattle.
Tulane entered singles competition with a 1-0 edge after claiming the doubles point behind wins at No.2 and No. 3. The Green Wave tandem of Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuehn, ranked 29th nationally, defeated the Husky duo of Ahn/Nauenberg, 8-3, on court two while Magas and Kockott used the same score on the third court to defeat Kolbovic/Simpson.
Magas, a native of Budapest, Hungary, improved to 16-3 on the year with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 6 over Allison Rainey for Tulane's second point of the afternoon. A 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 2 by Maria Ivanov over Dinka Hadzic, the nation's No. 43 player, followed by Darya Ivanov's win at the fourth spot sealed the Tulane victory.
"Maria Ivanov played excellent tennis this afternoon, and earned a convincing 6-4, 6-1 win over a ranked opponent," Wave coach David Schumacher said. "This is a solid win for us, we clinched it early at 4-1. Washington also lost 4-3 to Sacramento State, who we play tomorrow, so that will be a challenge for us as well."
Riding a six-match winning streak, the Green Wave (14-5) takes on No. 40 Sacramento State at 3 p.m. (CST) Sunday afternoon in Seattle. Tulane returns home to Goldring Tennis Center on April 13 for a 5 p.m. match against LSU.
