SEATTLE, Wash. - The Tulane women's tennis team swept the doubles and split the singles matches with No. 40 Sacramento State en route to its sixth 4-3 win of the season, Sunday afternoon in Seattle.
The No. 21 Green Wave captured the doubles point for the 12th time this season as No. 29 Julie Smekodub and Jenny Kuehn cruised to an 8-2 victory over the Hornets' Helland/Karnaukhova at No. 1. On court two, the senior pair of Maria Ivanov and Nancy Kockott recorded an 8-2 triumph over Erikson and Petersson while Dorottya Magas and Ana Saaibi defeated Sacramento State's Fessenko/Karaveyeva, 8-3, on the third court.
Early into singles play, the Wave found itself trailing in five of six matches, but battled back to claim the victory on three courts. Maria Ivanov used three sets to earn her second win in as many days, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, over Anna Erikson at No. 2. After dropping her first set 6-3, Smekodub stormed back in the final two frames to take a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory on court three over Roberta Fessenko. At No. 5, Magas ran her winning streak to 12 consecutive matches by defeating Anna Karaveyeva, 6-4, 6-4.
"The team fought very hard and played with a lot of heart today. They were down on five of the six singles matches and battle back to pull it, 4-3, out against a quality team," Tulane coach David Schumacher said. "Maria (Ivanov) was outstanding in both singles and doubles. Jenny Kuehn also played well, battling back after dropping her first set to a player that is one of the best in college tennis and was ranked No. 1 in Russia when she was 15."
The Green Wave (15-5) takes a seven-match winning streak to Forth Worth, Texas, for a showdown with Conference USA foe TCU on Friday afternoon before traveling to Baylor on Sunday. Tulane returns home to Goldring Tennis Center on April 13 for a 5 p.m. match against LSU.
