NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane women's tennis standout Jenny Kuehn has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI University Division At-Large Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced on Thursday.
As a first-team member of the All-District VI team, which recognizes student-athletes from schools in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Kuehn will automatically appear on the Academic All-America ballot. The 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team will be announced on June 16.
Kuehn, a three-time first-team All-Conference USA selection and the C-USA Player of the Year as a freshman and a sophomore, earned the distinction after posting a cumulative 3.845 grade point average as a double major in accounting and marketing. She has been named to the Conference USA Academic Honor Roll and has been recognized as an ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Scholar-Athlete twice.
On the court, Kuehn made an immediate impact upon her arrival on the Tulane campus. During her freshman campaign, the C-USA Freshman and Player of the Year paired with Julie Smekodub to win the 2002 ITA National Indoor and ITA Southwest Region doubles titles to earn a No. 1 ranking in doubles entering the spring season. She was also named the Louisiana Player of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.
As a sophomore, Kuehn garnered her second C-USA Player of the Year accolade and was named the Outstanding Singles Player of the C-USA Tournament as the Green Wave won its second consecutive league title and advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time in school history.
In 2005, Kuehn led the Wave to its third straight conference title and its second consecutive appearance in the Sweet 16. A first-team All C-USA selection and a member of the league's All-Decade Team, Kuehn earned a berth in the NCAA Singles Championship and ended the season with a 19-12 mark. In doubles play, Kuehn and Smekodub were ranked as high as 26th by the ITA and concluded the year with a mark of 23-3.
The academic honor is the first for a Green Wave women's tennis player since 2000 when then-junior Anna Monhartova claimed All-District VI honors.
Kuehn is one of four C-USA student-athletes to earn All-District VI Team honors as golfer Camellia Blackerby and tennis player Story Tweedie-Yates of TCU were also named to the first team. Paige Brown of TCU's tennis team was a second-team selection.
