OMAHA, Neb. - The Tulane University baseball team landed in Omaha, Neb., late Wednesday evening for the 2005 College World Series, and officially began preparation for the championship event on Thursday with a full day of action.
The Green Wave took the field at Rosenblatt Stadium at 1 p.m. (CDT) for a 50-minute practice on the field the CWS games will be played, and after a banquet of barbecue and trimmings, participated in a one-hour autograph session with local fans before attending the opening ceremony at 9 p.m. At the pre-tournament festivities, fifth-year senior Scott Madden was recognized for having the highest grade point average on the team, and the Tulane club received a special award for having the highest team GPA of the eight squads to advance to Omaha.
In part one of what will be a daily event during the Green Wave's stint at the 2005 College World Series, several members of the Tulane team were asked the "Question of the Day."
Thursday's question was "What is your first impression of Omaha?"
"Overwhelming. I had no idea it was going to be like this. It's been a great experience so far, and one I want to have for the next three years here at Tulane.
-Cat Everett, freshman infielder, Houston, Texas
"I love it. It's the best experience of my life so far. The field is great and the people here have been fantastic. It's everything I've expected."
-Matt Riser, junior outfielder, Picayune, Miss.
"I'm just trying to take it all in. I don't want to get caught up in all the festivities. We're here for a purposed, and I don't really want to think about it until it's all over."
-Joe Holland, senior second baseman, Beaumont, Texas
"So far it's like a big party. Everyone here is excited to see us. I talked to a couple of Nebraska fans here, and they were telling me how they expect us to kick their butts in a couple of days. It's been a lot of fun and I'm glad to be in this kind of atmosphere."
-Mark Hamilton, sophomore first baseman/left fielder, Bellaire, Texas
"Unbelievable. It's really fun. It's great. It's everything you'd imagine and more. The field is great. The fans are great, the people are great. It's just great."
-Nathan Southard, junior centerfielder, Luling, La.
"There's nothing to be excited about yet. We've got to win this thing first."
-Billy Mohl, junior pitcher, Sugar Land, Texas
"It's a beautiful city. I'm really trying to visualize the games right now. This is all the extra stuff right now, and I'm ready to get down to business."
-Micah Owings, junior utility athlete, Gainesville, Ga.
