NEW ORLEANS, La. - Capping one of the most successful years of Green Wave athletics, Tulane finished the 2004-05 campaign in 70th place in the final United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. Presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA TODAY, the Directors' Cup recognizes the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.
The Wave's finish is seven spots higher than last season's 77th-place finish, and ranks second among Conference USA schools, both new and old. Tulane tallied a total of 247 points while C-USA newcomer SMU totaled 398 to take the 47th spot. UCF, Rice and Tulsa placed 83rd, 89th and 99th, respectively, while departing league member Louisville ranked 50th and TCU tied for 95th.
Highlighting Tulane's 2004-05 year were the baseball team's trip to the College World Series, six Conference USA championships and NCAA Championship appearances by the women's golf, baseball, and men's and women's tennis teams. Tulane also sent individuals to the NCAA Championships for men's golf, diving and track and field.
"Our programs continue to excel on the field and this ranking is only the latest proof of the success our teams enjoyed in 2004-05," Director of Athletics Rick Dickson said. "We have only 16 programs, so to finish in the Top 70 of more than 300 Division I schools is quite an accomplishment. We're equally as proud of our results in the classroom, with a 3.0 cumulative GPA for all student-athletes again this spring and the graduation of 51 student-athletes. Overall, it was a banner year for Tulane Athletics."
Stanford claimed its 11th consecutive Directors' Cup title after winning national championships in women's tennis and volleyball. The Cardinal, which had 12 teams ranked in the Top 10, were followed by Texas, UCLA, Michigan and Duke in the Directors' Cup standings.
