NEW ORLEANS, La. - After hauling in 40 passes for 484 yards and two touchdowns Tulane University football standout Jeremy Williams was named honorable-mention Freshman All-American by The Sporting News, the national publication announced Friday.
A redshirt-freshman from Baytown, Texas, Williams led all Green Wave rookies in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. He also finished the year second on the club in receiving yards and third on the team in catches and tied for third on the team in touchdown receptions.
The honor is the third of the postseason for Williams, who was named to the Conference USA Media's All-Freshman Team and claimed honorable-mention recognition on the C-USA Coaches All-Conference Team.
After redshirting the 2005 campaign, Williams played in 11 of Tulane's 12 contests, including eight starts. He led the team in receiving three times, including a 10-catch, 106-yard performance against defending C-USA East Division Champion UCF on Nov. 18 in the Louisiana Superdome.
He posted eight multiple-reception outings including three-catch contests at Houston (Sept. 9) and vs. SMU (Sept. 30), four-reception performances against Army (Oct. 28) and at Marshall (Nov. 4) and snared five passes against Rice (Oct. 7) and at UTEP (Oct. 14).
The only Tulane receiver to catch at least one pass in every game he played in during the 2006 season, Williams had a big-play knack during his redshirt-freshman season with four receptions of 20-plus yards, including a career-best 25-yard catch against SMU. He also hauled in a nine-yard touchdown in the game against the Mustangs and hauled in a 21-yard scoring strike the next weekend against Rice.
Williams was one of 13 C-USA student-athletes and one of eight players from a Louisiana school to claim Freshman All-America honors from The Sporting News.
Joining Williams from C-USA are Southern Miss's Gerald McRath (LB, first team) and Damion Fletcher (RB, second team), Memphis' Matt Reagan (PK, second team), SMU's Justin Willis (QB, third team), Emmanuel Sanders (WR/KR, honorable mention), East Carolina's Terence Campbell (OT, honorable mention), Scotty Robinson (DE, honorable mention) and Van Eskridge (LB, honorable mention), UTEP's Mike Aguayo (OT, honorable mention) and Braxton Amy (LB, honorable mention), Marshall's Zearrick Matthews (CB, honorable mention) and Rice's Clark Fangmeier (PK, honorable mention).
From a state standpoint, Williams is joined on the Freshman All-America Team by LSU's Ricky Jean-Francois (DE/DT, first team), Ciron Black (OT, third team), Jacob Cutrera (LB third third) and Richard Dickson (TE, honorable mention), Louisiana-Lafayette's Chris Fisher (C, honorable mention), Louisiana-Monroe's Cardia Jackson (LB, honorable mention) and Louisiana Tech's Antonio Baker (DB, honorable mention).
