NEW ORLEANS - After a rookie campaign in which she broke a pair of school records for assists, Tulane women's basketball freshman Ashley Langford has earned Freshman All-American honors from the Women's Basketball News Service. She was one of just 10 freshmen nationally tabbed by the organization.
Langford is the first Tulane freshman to ever earn the honor and is the first Green Wave women's basketball All-American since 2003, when WomensCollegeHoops.com tabbed Teana McKiver to its honorable mention team.
Langford, who was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman team, averaged 6.58 assists per game to lead all freshmen nationally. She led Conference USA in assists as a rookie and ranks fifth among all players nationally. A native of Harrisburg, Pa., Langford dished out 171 assists in 2005-06 to shatter the Tulane single season record of 139, which was set during the 1982-83 season. She also broke the Green Wave single game mark for assists and tied the Conference USA single game mark with 14 in a 71-58 Tulane win on Feb. 26. She recorded five double-digit assist games during the season.
"Ashley is very deserving of this honor," said Tulane Head Coach Lisa Stockton. "She not only led us in assists, but displayed such maturity for a freshman playing as many minutes as she did and handling the situation [with the hurricane] so well. We're looking forward to the future with no seniors on the roster this year."
Langford also led Tulane in steals with 48 and in minutes played as she averaged 38.4 minutes per game. She averaged 9.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game with a season high 18 points versus Memphis.
The Green Wave posted a season record of 15-12 on the season and won six of their last nine contests to finish sixth in the league standings. Tulane's nine-woman roster included four freshmen, four sophomores and just one junior in 2005-06. The Green Wave spent the fall semester in Lubbock, Texas while displaced from their New Orleans home by Hurricane Katrina, and were the first collegiate or professional team to return to New Orleans with a Dec. 18th game in the city.
