NEW ORLEANS, La. - It was not exactly Stanford/Cal circa 1982, but the band was on the field for the final play of the Tulane University's football practice as part of Fan Day 2006 Sunday evening at the Westfeldt Facility.
As practice was coming to an end, Green Wave head coach Chris Scelfo charged freshman kicker Ross Thevenot with the task of making two of three 52-yard field goal tries in exchange for not having team run conditioning sprints.
With the marching band on hand as part of the Fan Day celebration, Scelfo invited the group on the field to create more noise to help simulate a game-day experience. As the band blared the fight song, Thevenot was unfazed as he sent the first one right down the middle and high over the crossbar before dinking the second one off the left upright to spark his teammates' celebration.
"We have to find out who is going to be able to make the plays when the band is playing (on game day)," Scelfo said. "Ross stepped up today, and we've got to have everybody do that.
"It was good to see all the fans, the band and the cheerleaders out here. They put a spark in our guys, giving it a game-day feel. It gave them a taste of what it's going to be like on Sept. 9 (for the regular-season opener at Houston) and definitely for Sept. 30 (when Tulane plays SMU in its first home game in the Louisiana Superdome since the 2004 season).
Following practice, members of the Tulane football, volleyball and cross country teams were on hand to meet the Green Wave fans, sign autographs and pose for pictures.
During the abridged practice, the Green Wave went through positional drills and 7-on-7 scenarios before going head to head in full team situations.
Junior running back Matt Forté turned a screen pass from senior quarterback Lester Ricard into an 80-yard touchdown, and senior widout Damarcus Davis took a reverse up the right sideline for a long gainer.
The defense made plays as well, including tackles behind the line of scrimmage by senior defensive lineman Avery Williams and rookie linebacker Josh Mitzel. The play of the day, however, came from junior safety Joe Goosby snared a pass from reserve quarterback Scott Elliot and returned it for a touchdown.
