Gameday!
Aug. 24, 2007
Today is our first game of the `07 season, back in good `ole "Fogey". We're pitted up against Colorado, who happens to be receiving votes in the preseason top 25, and man, are we ready to go!
We just got our new uniforms from the Nike sponsorship deal that the university recently signed. As a group of girls, we are always excited about new clothes, no matter what setting they are presented in, so we're feeling pretty dapper in our new attire.
The only problem is that since different companies have different cuts, a handful of us have spandex shorts that are too loose for now, but our equipment manager, Tommy Meyers is getting us what we need (Thanks Tommy!). This is something that none of us are used to and even a bit uncomfortable with; Ksenija Vlaskovic even went so far as to jokingly declare, "If we lose, it's because of the spandex."
Not only does an unfamiliar fit to the uniform add pressure to the game, but both Coach Kritza and Strength and Conditioning Coach Gavin Ozaki have ties to Colorado, They don't want to be beaten in their own gym. Gavin, who graduated from Colorado, warned us during our most recent weight lifting session: "if you lose to Colorado, I am going to run you immediately after the game. All you'll hear is `outside'."
I'm pretty sure he was joking, but you can never really tell with Gavin, so we don't want to find out.
Added to this stress from the coaches is the fact that we know everyone has high expectations for us this year: we were forecasted to finish second in our conference in preseason poll, and we returned all but one player from last year. We try to keep things in perspective, though, and worry about one game at a time while still looking at our season goals.
While stretching before every practice, I like to look at all the NCAA banners that both basketball teams have hanging in the gym, and it reminds me of what we're trying to accomplish this year. We want to go all the way.
You can help us get there! Come out to Fogelman Arena at 7 o'clock, make some noise and support us!
