BATON ROUGE, La - After an impressive performance in the last meet by the sprinters, Friday's LSU Purple Tiger Invitational was the the Tulane's distance runners turn to impress as the Green Wave put up two of the top four runners in the one-mile run. The Green Wave didn't go without sprinting success as junior Olivia Kizzee placed fifth in the 60-meter and the Green Wave took third in the 4x400 relay.
Sophomore Rebecca Coady placed second in the one-mile run with a time of 5:22, while freshman Johanna Gretschel was just behind in fourth at 5:24.
In the 60-meter dash, Kizzee placed fifth with a time of 7.68, while Kasey Rodgers posted a time of 7.78 in the semi-finals.
The Green Wave placed third in the 4x400, turning in a time of 3:53, six seconds behind a Olympic training squad. The meet featured a number of Olympic hopefulls running unattached, including women's 60-meter hurdlesWorld Indoor champion and Olympian Lolo Jones.
"You're always trying to gauge where you stand compared to some other teams," head coach Heather Van Norman said, "and I felt this was a good meet for us to do that with. The early part of the season is really preparation for what is to come. And this meet, being so close to home, is really a part of our training. The kids can sleep in their own beds, stay in their comfort zones and really focus on improving."
Freshman Elizabeth Piazza turned in a time of 12:34, good fror 15th in the 3000-meter run,
In the weight throw, senior Katarina Busljeta came in 11th with a toss of 13.25m.
Tulane is at the Armory Invitational on February 6-7 in New York.
