TULANE NOTES
Saturday's game marked the 15th meeting between Tulane and Houston on the gridiron and with the loss falls to 4-11 in the all-time series. Houston has now won the last seven meetings dating back to the 2003 season.
The loss drops Tulane to 2-4 on the year and 0-3 in Conference USA play. The Green Wave have now lost nine straight league contests, with their last win coming against SMU, 34-27, on Sept. 25, 2008 in the Louisiana Superdome.
One week after posting career highs in nearly every statistical category, redshirt-freshman quarterback Ryan Griffin was at it again as the native of Westlake Village, Calif., was 12-of-18 for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Griffin's four-yard touchdown pass to sophomore fullback Antoine Duplessis in 51 seconds into fourth quarter was the first of both players' careers.
Senior running back André Anderson posted his second 100-yard rushing day of the 2009 season and the sixth of his career after carrying the ball 18 times for 108 yards (6.0 avg.). His 108 yards against the Cougars moves him into a tie for sixth-place in Tulane history in career 100-yard rushing days, joining Jerald Sowell's six 100-yard efforts from 1993-96.
With a catch in the first quarter, Jeremy Williams has now caught at least one pass in 19 consecutive games dating back to the 2007 season and has hauled in at least three passes on 15 occasions during the 19-game stretch.
Williams finished the day with six catches for 63 yards. He now has 153 catches for 2,335 yards and 15 touchdowns for his career, which ranks ninth, sixth and tied for ninth in Green Wave history, respectively.
Williams posted 108 all-purpose yards on the day, adding a career-best 45 yards on eight carries against Houston.
Senior Ross Thevenot scored a season-high 10 points after connecting on all three of his field goal attempts and converting a PAT. His 43-yard field goal with 3:24 left to play in the first quarter was a season long, surpassing his previous season-long of 33 last week against Marshall.
Thevenot moves into fourth place in the Tulane career record book in kicking points scored (208) and eighth place in the overall scoring. He also moves into a tie for fourth place for field goals attempted (63 along with Todd Wiggins from 1987-89 and Tony Wood from 1981-84), remains fifth in field goals made (39) jumps to fifth in career field goal percentage at .619 (39-of-63).
With three receptions for 23 yards on Saturday against Houston, junior tight end Tyler Helm posted the first multiple-catch of his career. He entered the game with five career receptions for 58 yards, including one grab for 12 yards in 2009.
Also posting his first career multiple-catch outing was freshman wideout D.J. Banks, who hauled in three passes for 43 yards. Banks caught his first career pass last week against Marshall.
Junior free safety Alex Wacha posted a career-best 14 tackles (9 solo, 5 assists) against Houston. Senior strong safety Chinonso Echebelem, meanwhile, tied his career-high tackle total with 13 (11 solo, 2 assists). Echebelem previously had 13-tackle efforts at Memphis on Nov. 29, 2008 and against Tulsa on Nov. 3, 2007 in the Louisiana Superdome.
With a start at center today against Houston, junior Andrew Nierman has now started all 30 games so far in his collegiate career. Also extending double-digit start streaks for Tulane were junior OT Pete Hendrickson and senior DE Adam Kwentua with 16 straight each, and junior WR Casey Robottom at 12.
Junior tight end Cody Sparks started for the first time today. Originally projected to open the year as Tulane's starting tight end, Sparks hurt his knee during the summer and missed the first two games of the year. He played in the Green Wave's games against McNeese State, Army and Marshall before starting today. It was the first time Sparks has started since Oct. 4, 2008, against Army.
Tulane's captains for the game were senior RB André Anderson, senior LB David Kirksey, senior WR Jeremy Williams and senior OL Nick Landry.
HOUSTON NOTES
With a 5-1 start through their first five games, the Cougars marked the program's best start since 2003 when Houston also started the season 5-1.
With 44 points, the Cougars scored in their 112th consecutive game... The Cougars have not been shut out since a 48-0 loss at Texas on Sept. 23, 2000.
With 516 yards of total offense (334 pass, 182 rush), the Cougars have recorded at least 500 yards of total offense in six consecutive games to open the 2009 season... UH last failed to reach that milestone with 415 yards against Air Force during the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces on Dec. 31, 2008.

Junior center Jaryd Anderson, sophomore safety Roisean Haynes and freshman defensive tackle Tyrone Campbell all made their first career starts against Tulane.

A second quarter interception was the second of the season and career of junior defensive back Jamal Robinson.
A 3-yard touchdown carry for sophomore running back Justin Johnson was the first career score for the Richardson, Texas, native. It came on the 28th rushing attempt of his career.
With a third quarter blocked punt, junior defensive back Jeremy Smith gave the Cougars their first blocked punt since Sept. 20, 2008, when Wesley Scourten accomplish the task against Colorado State.
Junior quarterback Case Keenum has thrown a touchdown pass in his last 22 consecutive games, extending his school record... The previous record was 18 consecutive games by Andre Ware from 1988 to 1991.
Freshman tight end Tyler Chambers made his first career reception in the third quarter, catching a seven-yard pass from Keenum to set up a Houston touchdown later in the drive.
