NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane University women's swimming and diving team will look to continue making strides over the weekend when the Green Wave participate in the Cougar Classic Fall Invitational at the University of Houston Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
Swimming preliminaries and finals are slated to start at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively, on Friday and Saturday. Diving, meanwhile, will hold preliminaries at 12:30 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, swimming and diving prelims will start at 10 a.m. and the finals will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Tulane is one of nine teams participating in the three-day tournament, joining Conference USA rivals Houston and SMU as well as in-state foe LSU, along with Air Force, Incarnate Word, Kansas, Texas A&M and UNLV. Three of those teams are ranked in the College Swimming Coaches Association Top 25: Texas A&M at No. 8, SMU at No. 19 and LSU at No. 21.
"This is a dress rehearsal for the conference championship," Tulane head swimming and diving coach Lena Guarriello said. "Lucky for us, it's actually in our conference championship facility. We're going up against the toughest competition that we have so far this year. Three of the teams here are ranked in the Top 25. The girls came off a really heavy week of training last week, but I feel they are ready for a big weekend and I look forward to seeing them post some of their top times to date."
The teams will swim the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM and 400 medley relay on Friday before taking part in the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free on Saturday. The Cougar Classic Fall Invitational concludes on Sunday with the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
This weekend's invite is Tulane's first action since Oct. 30 at LSU. In that dual-meet, freshmen Allie Evans and Lauren Pfohl posted individual wins in the 500 free and 200 back, respectively, and the quartet of Pfohl, Erin Cunningham, Grace Tarka and Kylie Kastes emerged victorious in the 400 medley relay.
In addition to the three wins, Tulane also posted second-place finishes n the 1000 free, 200 fly, 100 free, 200 back, 100 fly, 200 IM and 400 free relay.
Following the weekend in Houston, the Green Wave return to action Friday, Dec. 4, when they travel across town to take on the University of New Orleans. The dual meet is the first of two for Tulane as the Wave will play host to San Diego State on Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. in the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
