NEW ORLEANS - Tulane sophomore Mike Mainguy was named to the Conference USA Cross Country All-Academic Team Wednesday. The Brookline, Mass. native owns a 3.92 grade point average in chemistry.
Mainguy ran in all five of Tulane's meets this season, posting three top 50 finishes. He placed 23rd at Louisiana Tech's Mook 4 Invitational, turning in a time of 23:08 in the 6K race for a season-high finish. The mark was six seconds faster than his 6K time in the season-opening Memphis Twilight, where he was Tulane's second finisher, in 23:14.
He posted his season-best 8K time at the Conference USA Championships, placing 52nd, with a mark of 28:37 as the third Tulane runner to complete the course. Mainguy earned a top 50 finish at the LSU Invitational with a 28:55 in the 8K race to place 42nd, finishing as the Green Wave's second runner across the line. He also placed 34th at the Mississippi College Invite, traversing the 8K course in 29:15.
Of the course, Mainguy is a dean's list and C-USA commissioner's honor roll member. He also participated in Tulane's Shadow A Student-Athlete Day, where Tulane athletes show local school children what college is about, and help them toward a path of attending college.
Mainguy earned the All-Academic honor in the first season he was eligible, and is the first Tulane student-athlete to earn the honor. The Conference USA All-Academic Cross Country teams were first named in 2006. Tulane re-started its men's cross country program in 2008, following a three-year hiatus following Hurricane Katrina. With freshmen ineligible, the young Green Wave had no members on the team last season.
Joining Mainguy on the 2009 Conference USA Cross Country All-Academic Team were Tulsa graduate student John Beattie (3.37, MBA), Marshall junior Henry Heisey (3.93, Chemistry), and a trio of sophomores: Tulsa's Bill Martin (3.89, Biochemistry), Rice's Matt Carey (4.00, Economics/Pre-Med) and Rice's Gabe Cuadra (3.72, Mathematical Economic Analysis).
