NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane men's tennis team, which returns to action in the 2009-2010 academic year, announced its first class of recruits as the program restarts under head coach Mark Booras. Adam Bernstein, Coby Kramer-Golinkoff, Etham Frenkel and Trevor Getz comprise a group rated as the number 22 class in the nation by The Tennis Recruiting Network
"This is a pretty significant moment for our program," Booras said. "It shows that the tradition and success of Tulane tennis is respected around the country, and that there is a desire to restore this team to a nationally recognized level once again."
Adam Bernstein, ranked as high as number 20 nationally by the Tennis Recruiting Network, hails from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The University school product advanced two rounds into the USTA National Championships this August.
"We are excited to have someone of Adam's level joining us," Booras said. "He has a high level of experience at the junior tennis level and can help us be competitive right away. He's a guy who can compete for a spot in the lineup at top 25 schools right away."
Coby Kramer-Golinkoff will join the Green Wave from Lower Merion High School in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, where he won a AAA State championship in 2006. Kramer-Golinkoff won a pair of sportsmanship awards in national tournaments and was part of the doubles tandem that won the champion at the National Open in Wayland, Mass., in 2007.
"Coby brings a lot of athletic ability to our program. He will be a solid part of our lineup and has a tremendous amount of upside and could develop into a leader for our program."
Etham Frenkel was a finalist in doubles at the USTA National Open, and in the Midwest Davis Cup in singles. From Long Grove, Illinois, he also played wide receiver for the football team at Adlai E. Stevenson High School.
"He's a strong, quick player, just a tremendous athlete," Booras explained. "We have high expectations for him. He has a good sense of tactics, so he is a player who can grow into his vast potential."
Rounding out the class is Trevor Getz of Duluth, Georgia. At the 5A level for Northview High School, Getz has won two state championships, in 2006 and 2008.
"Trevor rounds out this athletically gifted class. He has more of the same attributes we are trying to build our program around. He's fast, he's smart, and he has a lot of talent. The fact that he's been a part of championship teams is definitely a plus."
"These young men are the core of our foundation for the future of Tulane tennis. They compete at a level which exceeded my expectations. We're trying to form a group that will have the ability to develop their games, grow as players and compete at a top national program her at Tulane."
The Tulane men's tennis program had its string of nine consecutive NCAA appearances disrupted by the programs suspension following Hurricane Katrina in the 2005-06 season. The Green Wave won the Conference USA championship five times in 10 seasons; in 1997, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005; while finishing as the runner up in 2002 and 1999.
The 2005 Green Wave squad was ranked number 20 in the nation as Tulane finished ranked in the top 42 for six-straight seasons from 2000-05, peaking at number 14 in the final 2003 poll.
The Green Wave were a national powerhouse from 1930 to the mid-sixties. The Wave won the NCAA Team Championship in 1959 and had a pair of second-place finishes (1949 and 1957). Tulane also had eight singles champions and two doubles champions in that time. From 1939 to 1964, the Green Wave won 18 SEC Championships.
