BATON ROUGE- The Tigers of Louisiana State University put up big numbers in the fifth inning to break open the game and secure the win over Tulane Wednesday night in Baton Rouge. The Tigers knocked in 10 runs on 10 hits in the frame, giving them enough for the 13-2 win.
The Tigers put up a three-run first inning, with Ryan Schimpf starting things off with the one-out double to left field. Schimpf was quickly plated by the single off the bat of Blake Dean, bringing up DJ LeMahieu. LeMahieu hit a laser bag to Green Wave starter Aaron Loup that was deflected on Loup's glove. With runners at first and second, Loup went back to work, striking out Tyler Hanover for the second out of the inning. But Sean Ochinko picked up Hanover, ripping a double to left field that scored Dean and LeMahieu, giving LSU the three-run advantage early.
Tulane chipped away, with Evan Mistich picking up the two-out base knock to get things going to the Green Wave in the second inning. Drew Allain followed with an infield single that moved Mistich to second. Matt Ryan notched the RBI single up the middle, scoring Mistich and Tulane closed the gap to 3-1. The Green Wave added another run in the top of the third when Sam Honeck registered the base hit to right field off reliever Chris Matulis. Matulis entered the contest after Ben Alsup started for LSU, going 2.1 innings. With two outs and Honeck at first, Seth Henry stepped in and hit a chopper to Tyler Hanover at third base. Hanover threw to first but Sean Ochinko muffed the catch and Honeck rounded third, headed for home while Henry wound up at second, and it was 3-2 headed into the bottom of the third.
Loup held the Tiger bats at bay until the bottom of the fifth, when Schimpf took the first pitch of his at bat over the right field wall on a line, giving LSU the 4-2 lead. Dean followed suit, taking the next pitch to the same part of the yard and with one out in the bottom of the fifth, LSU had extended their lead, 5-2. The two long balls and an additional base hit would end Loup's outing, with the southpaw throwing 4.1 innings while striking out five. Matt Petiton entered the ballgame but the Tigers stayed hot, picking up four more runs before two more Green Wave arms would take the mound. Mason Griffin became the Wave's fourth pitcher of the night and came in to get the groundball comebacker for the final out of the inning but not before LSU extended their lead 13-2 after five full.
The game remained scoreless through seven, when it became official, with the umpire crew calling the game with the 13-2 final.
Tulane will hit the road again as they travel to Hattiesburg, Miss. to take on Southern Miss in Conference USA play over the weekend.
