HATTIESBURG, Miss.- Things just never fell into place for Tulane as the Green Wave dropped their Conference USA Tournament opener to Southern Miss 15-2 Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park.
Southern Miss got on the board early when Bo Davis picked up a two-out triple down the right field line. He crossed the dish for the first run of the contest on a throwing error on the play and Southern Miss had the 1-0 early advantage. Kameron Brunty followed with the walk and Corey Stevens singled through the left side to put runners at first and second for Tulane starter Jonathan Garrett. Joey Archer extended the Golden Eagle lead when he took Garrett over the left field wall and Southern Miss was up 4-0. A base hit to Michael Ewing would bring in southpaw Aaron Loup. Loup threw one pitch and induced the popup out of B.A. Vollmuth to get the Green Wave in the dugout.
"They really took it to us tonight," head coach Rick Jones said. "We never really got out of the gate. They swung the bats. [They had] 15 hits and 15 runs, we made four errors and didn't pitch across the board and we didn't swing it well enough."
Josh Prince jumpstarted the Tulane offense with an infield single the junior legged out. Scott Powell followed with a bullet up the middle to move Prince into scoring position and Southern Miss starter Todd McInnis issued the base on balls to Honeck to load the bases. Tulane picked up a lone run on a double play ball that scored Prince but it was all the Wave would get in the first and it was 4-1 going into the second inning.
Southern Miss added a pair of runs in the third and a five-spot run in the fourth, giving the Golden Eagles a ten-run advantage. Tournament play rules dictated that the game would have been declared over after seven innings but the Green Wave attempted to breathe life into the dugout when Jared Dyer took the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh over the left field wall, making it 11-2 and extending the contest. Both Dyer and Seth Henry went 2-3 in the contest, but Southern Miss tacked on four more runs in the eighth, proving to be too much for Tulane, as the game was called at the conclusion of the inning.
The Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, McInnis tossed 6.0 innings to pick up the win, to improve to 8-4 while Garrett took the loss for Tulane and drops to 5-4.
Tulane will try to keep their season hopes alive Thursday as they take on UCF, who dropped a 6-3 decision to ECU earlier Wednesday. First pitch is slated for 12:30PM at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss.
