NEW ORLEANS- More than 400 new donors to the Tulane Athletics Fund showed their support for Tulane student-athletes last Saturday during the inaugural Tulane 5k for 4k run/walk on Tulane's campus. The event, which invited supporters to participate with Tulane student-athletes and coaches, raised over $30,000 for Tulane athletic programs.
Following the 5k course, a post-race party took place on the field at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, with home plate serving as the finish line. The celebration continued on the field, where participants, student-athletes, and coaches enjoyed an early barbecue lunch with all the trimmings while listening to some great live music.
"It was a wonderful event," athletic director Rick Dickson said. "The pressure was on our cross country kids to not let anyone beat them and they turned in a fine finish. A big thanks goes out to all of those who participated and showed their support by sponsoring a participant. The first Tulane 5k for 4k was a huge success thanks to everyone's support."
In the women's division, Tulane cross-country and track team member Rebecca Coady placed first while Kelly Nicholas finished second and Leah Peelman came in third. In the men's division, Tulane cross-country and track team member Brian Lozes finished first with Keith Balza coming in second with Tulane Business School faculty member Bill Reese placing third in the event. Swimming and Diving Coach Lena Guarriello was the first Tulane coach to finish the course.
Due to the success of the event, the Tulane Athletic Department has determined that the second annual Tulane 5k for 4k will take place during the school year in an effort that will allow more student-athletes to participate in the event.
