NEW ORLEANS - With less than two weeks remaining before the Green Wave's return to the pool following a four-year layoff, the Tulane University women's swimming and diving program added four new members to its 2009-10 roster, head coach Lena Guarriello announced Tuesday.
The Green Wave added Arkansas transfer Kylie Kastes, distance-free standout Kristin Ates, breaststroke specialist Jillian Daleiden and diver Sarah McGoldrick. Kastes enters the 2009-10 season as a junior and has two seasons of eligibility remaining while Ates, Daleiden and McGoldrick are all true freshmen. All four student-athletes are eligible to begin competition immediately.
"We are very happy to add these four talented newcomers to our roster for the upcoming season," Guarriello said. "Kylie brings some much-needed experience to a team that is entirely true freshmen except for her. We will look to her for leadership not only in the pool and in the way we handle ourselves in weight training and practice, but away from the pool as well. Jillian, Sarah and Kristin all bring something to the table and I am looking forward to seeing them in action next weekend."
Kastes, a butterfly specialist, joins the Green Wave program after spending the previous two years as a member of the swim team at the University of Arkansas where she helped the Razorbacks finish a school-record fifth in the Southeastern Conference Championship Meet.
As a sophomore, Kastes posted top times of 53.83 in the 100 free, 2:08.65 in the 200 IM, 56.77 in the 100 fly and 2:05.60 in the 200 fly. As a freshman during the 2007-08 season, she tallied top times of 25.14 in the 50 free, 55.25 in the 100 free, 5:06.97 in the 500 free, 57.49 in the 100 fly, 2:05.77 in the 200 fly. Away from the pool, Kastes was a member of the 2009 SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll and the 2008 SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll.
She originally signed with Arkansas following a four-year prep career at Countryside High School where she was named All-American in the 200- and 400-free relays, and was honored as the Most Dedicated swimmer three years in a row. She earned state title in the 200-free relay and set school records in the 200- and 400-free relays and the 200-medley relay.
A native of Palm Harbor, Fla., Kastes also lettered twice as a prepster in track and field where she helped the team win the PCAP Championship as a junior and was a state qualifier as a middle-distance runner.
Ates comes to Tulane from Charlotte, N.C., where she lettered twice at Zebulon B. Vance High School before playing her final two prep seasons at Mallard Creek for coach Taylor Blanton. A 4A state qualifier in the 200- and 500-yard free in each of her final three seasons, Ates was voted team captain as a junior and senior, and twice earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-America honors.
She was named MECA Female Swimmer of the Year, was voted team MVP and was tabbled Senior of the Year by both Wendy's High School Heisman and The Charlotte Observer in 2009. Totally deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other, Ates became the youngest participant at age 13 to competed in the Deaflympics in Melbourne, Australia, where she won the silver medal in the relays in 2005. She also won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals in individual events at the 2007 World Deaf Championships in Taipei, Taiwan,
Daleiden arrives at Tulane from the West Coast where she was a four-year letterwinner at Davis (Calif.) Senior High. She claimed the 5-Star Award all four years as a prepster, was named Most Improved as a sophomore, and earned the Denali Knapp Award as a senior.
A section finalists from 2007-09, Daleiden won the league title in the 100 breast as a sophomore and helped the 400 medley relay team emerge victorious at the league championships as a senior. In addition to her performance at Davis, Daleiden also swam for the Davis Aquadarts Aquatics Club.
McGoldrick, meanwhile, joins the Tulane team as its only diver for the upcoming season. A native of Versailles, Ky, and 2009 graduate of Woodford County High, McGoldrick was named all-region from her eighth grade season on, claimed the 110 Percent Award as an eighth grader and freshman, and claimed all-state honors as a sophomore and senior.
As a senior, she received WCHS's Coaches Award. Away from the pool, McGoldrick was a member of the A/B Honor Roll, earned the Political Science, Programming and Presidential Awards, and claimed a silver medal in academics.
The four new additions bring the Tulane swimming and diving roster to 17. They join 2008 Early Signing Period recruits Kayla Alf-Huynh (Portland, Ore.), Erin Cunningham (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), Samantha Davis (Orlando, Fla.), Kristine Gu (Longwood, Fla.), Bolton Harris (Dallas, Texas), Emily Needham (Manchester By The Sea, Mass.), Lauren Pfohl (Duluth, Ga.) and Grace Tarka (El Granada, Calif.), as well as late spring signees Gisele Calderon (Baton Rouge, La.), Allie Evans (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Rebekah Harris (Winter Park, Fla.), Hayley Tilton (Terra Ceia, Fla.) and Elizabeth Whitaker (Savannah, Ga.).
The Green Wave open the 2009-10 season on Saturday, Oct. 3, when they play host to cross-town rival University of New Orleans at 10 a.m. at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Tulane last fielded a women's swimming and diving team during the 2005-06 season before suspending the program in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The program was extremely successful prior to its suspension, as Linda McEachrane was tabbed Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2004 and the team won the C-USA team title in 2005.
