TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Tulane's men's tennis team returns to the courts after a three-week layoff Friday for the four-day 2010 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Southern Regional Tournament at the University of Alabama's Tennis Stadium.
The Green Wave has not competed since the Southern Miss Invitational at the end of September.
"This is our biggest tournament of the fall," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "All the top teams in the region are going to be here. If you advance to the singles final you earn an automatic bid into the national indoor tournament and if you win the doubles tournament you get the automatic bid into the national indoor tournament."
A total of 12 teams from the states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi will join Tulane this weekend. The teams slated to participate are Alabama, Auburn, Jacksonville State, UL-Lafayette, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Troy and UAB.
"This sets up for the regional rankings for the year and lets us know where we stand." Booras added. "This tournament will be a very good gage for us in trying to figure out where we stand in the region. We are looking forward to it."
Tulane is led by sophomore Idan Mark who is expected to be seeded in the top 20 among the over 120 singles players this weekend. Mark is 3-2 in singles this fall and posted a 1-1 record at the ITA All-American Championships two weeks ago. Fellow sophomore Coby Kramer-Golinkoff is 5-0 this fall with a singles title at the ULL Invitational, while sophomore Joe Young is 5-1 in singles this fall and also won a title at ULL.
Singles action beings on Friday at 8:30 a.m. and two singles matches will be played. Doubles will begin in the after with two matches also being played on Friday.
The draws have not been release as of 8 p.m. Thursday night. Please visit www.tulanegreenwave.com or www.itatennis.com for more information.
