Kurdadze Advances to Quarterfinals At USTA/ITA Southern Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior Mariam Kurdadze punched her ticket to the quarterfinals in singles play, and two Green Wave student-athletes advanced in the consolation bracket as the Tulane University women's tennis team wrapped up day two of the 2010 USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championship Saturday at the Pam M. Courington Tennis Pavilion.
With a 7-6, 6-2 win over Auburn's Maria Arechavalet, Kurdadze is now three wins shy of advancing to the UTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which are slated for No. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Wave were 4-4 overall for the day with a 3-1 singles mark and a 1-3 showing in doubles action. For the weekend, Tulane is 14-9 (10-6 singles, 4-3 doubles).
Joining Kurdadze in the singles win category were sophomores Hila Elster and Emma Levy, who both earned victories in the consolation draw. Elster blanked LSU's Ariel Morton 6-0, 6-0 while Levy downed South Alabama's Alina Volman 6-2, 6-2.
Levy joined Kurdadze to post a second-round, 8-4 doubles win over Northwestern State's Martina Rubesova and Andrea Nedorostova, but the Green Wave pair's regional run was halted in the quarterfinals when Connor Vogel and Gabby Rangel outlasted the duo, 8-6.
Kurdadze can exact a bit of revenge on Vogel on Saturday as the two are slated to face off in the singles quarterfinals in a match slated to begin at 11 a.m. The winner of that contest will advance to the semis where they will face either Keri Frankenberger of LSU or Abigail Guthrie of Ole Miss at 2 p.m. The regional championship match will be played on Monday at a time yet to be determined
Following the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championship, the Green Wave wrap up fall play on Nov. 12-14 at the Lakewood Ranch Clay Court Classic in Tampa, Fla. Tulane is slated to open the spring portion of its 2010-11 schedule on Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Wave will play a double-header against Xavier-New Orleans and Southern at noon and 4 p.m., respectively, at the Goldring Tennis Stadium.
