HOUSTON - Five Green Wave individuals posted lifetime bests in their respective events as the Tulane University women's swimming and diving team posted a fifth-place finish at the Phill Hansel Cougar Classic on Saturday at the University of Houston's Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
As a team, the Green Wave scored360 points for the weekend, 49 more than sixth-placed New Mexico (311) and 108 behind fourth-placed Rice (468. LSU won the Hansel Classic team trophy with a 1117.50 while SMU and host Houston finished with 875.50 and 562 points, respectively.
"This has been the best team performance that we have had since our reinstatement," Tulane head swimming and diving coach Lena Guarriello said. "The girls pulled together for 70 percent season best swims over the weekend. We're swimming smart and it's showing in our results."
Allie Evans finished second in the 1650 free with a lifetime-best 16:55.72 and her 1000 free split of 10:13.75 is also a personal-best time. Emily Needham joined Evans with a personal best in the mile with a time of 17:52.19 to finish 17th overall.
Erin Cunningham did the same in the 200 back with a 2:04.87 in the preliminaries before topping her best time with a 2:04.61 in the finals to finish 11th. Kayla Alf-Huynh and Grace Tarka, meanwhile, followed suit in the 100 free. Alf-Huynh had a 51.14 in preliminaries before posting a 50.88 in the finals to finish sixth while Tarka had a 53.84 in the prelims and a 53.71 in the finals for a 29th-place showing.
Freshman Shelby Kiser led the Tulane effort in the 200 breast with a 2:26.37 to finish tied for 19th, and both Needham and Gisele Calderon finished 12th and 13th in the 200 fly with respective times of 2:06.80 and 2:07.71. The Green Wave closed out the Cougar Classic with a fourth-place showing in the 400 free relay as the quartet of Alf-Huynh, Hagar Elgendy, Lauren Pfohl and Rachel Ranson combined to clock a 3:25.64.
Tulane opens the spring portion of its schedule on Jan.7, 2011, when they travel to the West Coast to take on San Diego State.
