NEW ORLEANS - Every year, the Tulane Green Wave's Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) try to find creative ways to help the local community through organized community service efforts. On Friday evening (Dec. 3) at the women's basketball contest versus Saint Joseph's the SAAC presented the Second Harvest Food Bank with a check to culminate their efforts as a part of Conference USA's "Changing Lives Program" that concluded last week on the Uptown campus.
"It is inspiring to see a group of young people who were so eager to take a leadership role in their community and help those who are in need," said Lacey Momic, the Director of Development at Second Harvest. "They did a great job of coordinating their intentions with our organization and showed a distinct professionalism throughout their efforts. It was a great pleasure to work with SAAC."
For one week this fall, the members of Tulane's SAAC took part in the "Changing Lives Program", which was sponsored by Conference USA, and competed against other C-USA schools to see who could raise the most funds and canned food to donate to a local food bank of their choice. Tulane chose the Second Harvest Food Bank, a local agency serving 23 parishes in south Louisiana including the greater New Orleans area, to team up with during their drive.
The Green Wave posted student-athletes at the gate of all of their sporting events and collected monetary and non-perishable food donations to help Second Harvest. The Universities food service operations, Sodexo partnered with SAAC, and accepted donations from students at the all of their food service locations on campus. Overall, the Green Wave helped raise nearly $2,400, which equates to over 3,500 pounds of donated food to the Second Harvest Food Bank.
"It was a fantastic opportunity to team up with the SAAC for our annual canned-food drive this year," said John Coleman, Marketing Manager for Tulane's Sodexo Campus Services. "I'm very proud of our Sodexo employees and the students on Tulane's campus for really stepping it up and making this partnership a huge success for our campus and the Second Harvest Food Bank."
Tulane took part in Conference USA's "Changing Lives Program" which was an initiative brought forth by the conferences Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. It is a program that helps unite the schools through a conference-wide community service initiative. Each C-USA school worked with their local communities to conduct a campus-wide canned food drive. The food drive took place for one week during the fall semester and everything raised benefitted the local community organization of the school's choice.
