Swimming & Diving Remains Fifth At C-USA Championship

HOUSTON - The Green Wave posted 17 season-best swims and had eight lifetime-best times as the Tulane University swimming and diving team remained in fifth place following day two of the 2010 Conference USA Championship Thursday at the University of Houston Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
The Green Wave scored 60 points on the day to bring their two-day total to 116. Tulane is currently 40 points ahead of sixth-place Marshall (76) and 73 behind fourth-placed East Carolina. (189). SMU leads the league with 270 points, followed by Rice and Houston with 206 and 2-5, respectively.
"We had an outstanding day of racing," Tulane head swimming and diving coach Lena Guarriello said. "The team swam well this morning and even better tonight. We're looking forward to some of our best events tomorrow."
Headlining a day of lifetime bests was freshman Kayla Alf-Huynh, who set a personal best in the 50 free preliminaries with a 23.38 and went on to earn third-team All C-USA honors in the event with a 23.17. In addition, she set a school record in the 100 back by posting a time of 56.71 in the Green Wave's 400 medley relay. In that relay, Tulane finished seventh with a time of 3:52.66, which was 3.19 seconds faster than the Wave's previous season-low.
Allie Evans had a lifetime best in the 500 free finals with a 4:54.76 to finish fifth. Bolton Harris (5:04.50) and Gisele Calderon (5:07.25) set lifetime bests in the 500 free preliminaries before besting those times with 5:03.93 and 5:05.79 to finish 12th and 14th, respectively. Kristine Gu had a lifetime best in the preliminaries of the 50 free with a 24.58, and Kylie Kastes posted a personal low time of 1:52.17 in the 200 free time trial.
In addition, five other individual posted season-best times. Kristin Ates (5:11.18) and Emily Needham (5:13.03) tallied season-best times in the 500 free to finish 22nd and 26th in the preliminaries, respectively. In the 200 IM, Erin Cunningham finished 15th overall with a season-best 2:07.87 while Grace Tarka and Elizabeth Whitaker posted season-best times in the preliminaries with respective times of 2:08.96 and 2:10.42. Not to be left out, Hayley Tilton had a season-best time of 24.94 in 50 free preliminaries to finish 30th.
The C-USA Championship resumes on Friday at 10 a.m. with the preliminaries in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and one-meter springboard while the finals those events and the 200 free relay will take place in the evening. From there, the 2010 C-USA Championship concludes on Saturday with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free, 400 free relay and platform diving.
