NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane University women's swimming and diving team will close out the regular-season on Saturday, Feb. 6, when the Green Wave play host to Vanderbilt at 10 a.m. in the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.
Saturday's meet is just the second home event of the 2009-10 season for the Green Wave. Tulane will us the competition as a tune-up for the Conference USA Championship, which will be hosted by the University of Houston from Feb. 24-27.
"We're really excited to finish our dual-meet season at home," Tulane head swimming and diving coach Lena Guarriello. "Vanderbilt has a solid group of swimmers and our girls are excited for the challenge."
The Green Wave will get a glimpse of the future, perhaps, when Vanderbilt comes to town as the Commodores are just in their fourth season of existence themselves. For the year, Vandy is 2-7 on the year, including a 120-118 win over Marshall last Friday at the Frederick Fitch Natatorium in Huntington, W.Va.
Tulane, meanwhile, is 1-5 in dual meets in its first season of action since the 2005-06 season. Fielding a team of 17 freshman and one junior, the young Green Wave have gotten better each time out. In their last outing - a triple-dual meet against LSU, Rice and host Houston on Jan. 29-30, one individual posted a lifetime best and the team combined for 10 season-best marks in various events.
During Day One of the Houston meet, Gisele Calderon posted a lifetime best in the 100 fly and had a season-best int eh leadoff 100 of the 400 free relay. Other individuals to post season-best times were Kayla Alf-Huynh in the 100 back and 50 free, Kristin Ates and Bolton Harris in the 1,000 free, and Lauren Pfohl in the 50 free and 200 medley relay.
A day later, Alf-Huynh and Grace Tarka posted season-best times in the 100 free. Elizabeth Whitaker and Gristine Gu, meanwhile, posted season-best marks in the 100 breast.
"We'd love to go into our conference championship with a win," Guarriello said. "The team had a great day of practice and they're ready to race. This will be the last opportunity prior to conference for the divers to practice in a competition setting. So, tomorrow will be a big day for the divers as well."
The 2009 Conference USA Swimming & Diving Championship will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the University of Houston Campus Wellness and Recreation Center. The four-day event culminates on Saturday, Feb. 27. Back in 2004-05, Tulane won the C-USA title in just its second year of the originally implemented program. The swimming and diving program suspended operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina before starting back up this fall.
