NEW ORLEANS - Idan Mark, a sophomore men's tennis player for the Tulane Green Wave, was selected to compete in the 2010 D'Novo Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships held at the University of Tulsa Oct. 2-10, it was announced by the ITA on Wednesday.
"To be invited to this tournament means you are among the best players in the country," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Idan was fortunate enough to get into the qualifying round instead of having to play the prequalifying. It is based on his previous record as a junior player."
Mark, entering his first season at Tulane after sitting out last season, was invited to compete in the qualifying singles tournament and is able to bypass the prequalifying tournament. The three day qualifying tournament begins Oct. 4 and will have 128 players. Each player must win three rounds to advance to the Main Draw which means 16 players from the qualifying singles will advance for the right to compete for the championship.
"This is a nice opportunity for him to see how he competes with the rest of the country," Booras added. "There are going to be a lot of great players. We will get to see where he stands."
A native of Hod Hasharon, Isreal, Mark played as an amateur prior to coming to Tulane in the ATP World Tour and also competed in numerous ITF Futures events.
The D'Novo ITA All-American Championships is the first leg of the three collegiate grand slam events. The second leg is the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third leg is the NCAA Division I Championships in May.
Mark and the rest of the Green Wave players will travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., this Saturday to compete in the abbreviated Southern Miss Invitational that was originally schedule to be a three day event starting Friday.
