NEW ORLEANS - For the second straight day, Tulane men's tennis newcomer Radu Ionescu secured the Green Wave victory. Sunday he earned Tulane's fourth point enroute to a 7-0 victory over Alcorn State at the Goldring Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (2-0) did not drop a set on Sunday in the sweep of the Braves (0-1), giving Tulane a clean sweep of the weekend after not losing a set in yesterday's 7-0 win over Jacksonville State.
"This was a perfect weekend for us," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We had two good teams come in here and push us hard. We had been off for two months and we needed some matches that were really going to push us. Jacksonville State did a good job of that yesterday and Alcorn State did the same thing today and really made us bring our A game."
The afternoon began with Tulane taking the doubles point with Ionescu and Idan Mark pairing up on court one to defeat ASU's Alexander Lidzar and Anton Kruton, 8-3. Shaye Wali and Takuma Ohashi defeated Y. Shearron-Hawkins and Alejando Dominguez, 8-2, on court two and Rodrigo Rappaccioli teamed with Adam Bernstein got past Winfried Weinbeer and Push Rajpurouit, 8-1, on court three.
The overall match was decided when Ionescu defeated Lidzar, 6-2, 6-2, on court two for Tulane's fourth point.
"Radu is a good competitor," Booras said. "He's season and been in college tennis for three years so we are fortunate to have that kind of experience."
Mark got the Green Wave's first singles point with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kruton on court one, while Joe Young earned the second singles point and third of the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Dominquez on court three.
Ohashi defeated Rajpurouit, 6-2, 6-2, on court six, while Rappaccoili and Wali each won their matches by taking tie-breakers in the second set.
Tulane will return to action next Sunday when they host Lamar at 1 p.m. CST in the Goldring Tennis Center.
