NEW ORLEANS - On the scoreboard, Sunday's meeting between the Tulane and Alabama women's tennis team was a lopsided one as the No. 47 Crimson Tide handed the Green Wave a 7-0 defeat at the Goldring Tennis Center.
Upon closer review, Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said she saw significant improvement and is excited about the remaining 2011 spring season. With the loss, however, the Green Wave fall to 2-2 on the year while Alabama improved to 3-1.
"If there was ever a misleading lopsided score, it would be today," Sisk said. "We really did a great job out there competing in all of the matches. I told the girls the only things separating us from that level would being more aggressive in the points when we have that opportunity and playing the bigger points better. We had several chances to go three sets on some courts and we didn't execute as well as we are capable of doing.
"Alabama is a strong team. They have great depth and I am sure they will end up Top 30 nationally as a team by the time the year is up. I am confident about our ability to get there as well...As a coach, it is fun to watch everything really moving in the right direction. The best part of the day was the meeting after when the girls each talked about what they want to do to improve and how close they realize we are."
Throughout the course of the day, the Green Wave squared off against three nationally-ranked singles players and a pair of nationally ranked doubles tandems. The highest ranked foe came at No. 1 doubles where Alabama's Alexa Guarachi and Courtney McLane - the No. 6 tandem nationally - defeated Tulane's Mariam Kurdadze and Emma Levy, 8-3.
The Crimson Tide clinched the doubles point when Alex Clay and Taylor Lindsey downed Emma Helistén and Lindsay Dvorak on Court 2, 8-4, and Alabama completed the sweep as Antonia Foehse and Mary Anne Macfarlane - the No. 32 doubles team in the nation - downed Hila Elster and Elizabeth Hamlin, 8-7 (8-6), on Court 3.
Taylor Lindsey gave Alabama a 2-0 advantage, claiming a 6-3, 6-0 win over Helistén in No. 6 singles, and Levy fell to No. 63 Guarachi on Court 2 6-3, 6-1. Clay posted the match-clinching point with a Dvorak on Court 4, 6-4, 6-2.
Kurdadze fell to No. 15 Macfarlane on Court 1 6-1, 7-5 while Hamlin dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to NO. 72 McLane on Court 3. Elster put up the biggest fight of the day, taking Foehse to three sets in NO. 5 singles action before losing 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.
The Green Wave return to action on Feb. 12 when they travel to Denver, Colo., to take on BYU. It is the first of two contests in the Mile High Scity as Tulane will take on the University of Denver on Feb. 13 before returning to the Goldring Tennis Center on Feb. 16 for a 2 p.m. showdown against LSU.
