NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane athletic department hosted a group of kids from James W. Johnson Elementary on Wednesday, March 3 for Shadow a Student-Athlete Day on the Uptown campus. The Green Wave athletic department set up activities for the group, which included going to class with selected student-athletes, attending a nutrition class and lunch on campus.
"This event is one of our department's favorite things to do," said Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services Lindsey Stineman. "It is a chance for our student-athletes to share their experiences with a younger audience. This helps to expose them to a day in the life of a college student and, hopefully, impacts their future decisions with high education."
The 50 students from James W. Johnson Elementary were paired up with student-athletes and attended classes with them and got to see a little of the college experience. After classes, the elementary students returned to the Wilson Center and were given a quick seminar on nutrition before heading out to Greer Field at Turchin Stadium to take in the Green Wave's baseball game versus Northwestern State.
The Shadow a Student-Athlete Day is an initiative that the Green Wave athletic department has worked with local schools on for the past few years, offering the program once a semester.
