TAMPA - Despite winning the doubles point, the Tulane men's tennis team was not able to come away with a victory, falling 5-2 to South Florida on Saturday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Tulane (5-4, 0-1 C-USA) took the doubles point after the duo of Idan Mark and Radu Ionescu and the pair of Shaye Wali and Joe Young defeated their South Florida (4-1) counterparts.
Mark and Ionescu got past Lucas Jovita and Jamal Adderley, 9-8, on court one, while Wali and Young defeated Yannick Yoshizawa and Romain Deridder, 8-5, on court two.
"Guys fought hard, but USF bounced back well after doubles and got a good start in singles," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We showed a lot of heart in fighting, but were not able to close it out. It is time to regroup and learn from what we did today and build on the good things and kick some of the bad things so we can come out tomorrow and play a good match against UCF."
USF won the overall match after taking the first four singles matches. The deciding match came when Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard defeated Adam Bernstein, 6-3, 7-6, on court six.
Tulane's lone singles win came on court one where No. 89 Mark defeated No. 114 Jovita, 2-6, 6-4, 10-8. The win improved the sophomore to 7-2 in dual singles matches this spring.
"Idan did a great job today," Booras added. "He showed a lot of fight and heart coming back after being down a set and a break and finding his way back into the match and coming away with the win."
Tulane will travel over to Orlando to face Conference USA foe UCF at 11 a.m. CST on Sunday.
