TULSA, Okla. - In a hard fought dual match, the Tulane men's tennis team ended their season Friday evening with a 4-0 loss to Rice in the opening round of the 2011 Conference USA Championship at the University of Tulsa's Case Tennis Center.
The Green Wave (11-11), the No. 7 seed, fell just short in doubles and could not hold off the Owls (16-8), the No. 2 seed, in singles. Rice advances to face SMU in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.
Idan Mark and Joe Young improved to 9-3 as a doubles team this spring with an 8-3 victory over Harry Fowler and Oscar Podlewski on court one. That win evened the score in doubles, but Rice's duo of Christian Saravia and Michael Nuesslein edged Shaye Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 8-6, on court two to secure the point for the Owls.
Rice took that momentum into singles and earned two quick wins on court six and court two to take a 3-0 lead in the match.
Podlewski came from behind over Young on court three to clinch the victory for the Owls. Young took the first set over Podlweski, 6-4, but couldn't hang on for the victory and fell, 6-0, 6-3 in the next two sets.
The 2011 C-USA Championship continues Saturday with the two semifinal matches with the title match scheduled for Sunday at noon CDT at the Case Tennis Center.
