NEW ORLEANS - Idan Mark, a first-year player for the Tulane men's tennis team, and sophomore Joe Young each received state honors from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA), it was announced on Thursday.
Mark was named the Newcomer of the Year in Louisiana and was tabbed a first-team All-Louisiana selection, while Young was named to the second-team. The awards were voted on by the men's tennis sports information contacts in the state.
"It is quite an honor for both Idan and Joe to be selected for these awards," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "I'm not surprised because these two guys have led our team throughout the year in singles and in doubles. They occupied our number one and two spots most of the year and played number one doubles together most of the year. They did a good job competing and helping us reach our team goals. Individually Idan was in and out of the rankings and having a national ranking in your first year is quite an accomplishment. Joe really turned this around from last year as a freshman and had a fantastic record."
During the 2011 season, Mark, ranked No. 101 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, also earned second-team All-Conference USA honors as well as earning Newcomer of the Year in the conference. He posted a 12-7 dual match record in singles, including a 4-3 mark in conference matches playing on court one. The Hod Hasharon, Israel, native finished the season with three wins in the last four decisions, including wins over conference foes UAB and Southern Miss.
Mark also collected a 17-7 overall doubles record, including a 15-5 record in dual matches.
Young, a Redlands, Calif., native, owned a 20-13 overall singles mark and posted a 12-10 dual match record and earned six singles wins on court three and had five more on court two. He also went 11-7 overall in doubles, including 10-6 in dual matches. Eight of his doubles victories came on court one and seven came when paired with Mark.
