NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane Athletics Fund hosted the first Athletics Donor "Summer Camp" evening last Tuesday in the James W. Wilson Center, offering guests an insider's perspective of the daily life of a Tulane student-athlete.
Twenty current student-athletes led groups to different stations in the Wilson Center to meet coaches, see how game film is broken down, learn about academic support, discover the newest technology in athletic training, hear from the equipment and strength and conditioning staffs, and join in a Hullaboo cheer led by Director of Athletics Rick Dickson and Head Men's Basketball Coach Ed Conroy.
The five groups were given an in-depth tour of the Wilson Center, including the football conference room, where they heard from video staff about how DVD and HD video technology is making filming games much easier. Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services Lindsey Stineman spoke about the resources available to freshmen athletes, in particular, including priority registration and academic checklists to make sure assignments are completed on schedule.
A highlight for many of the donors was hearing from Director of Equipment Operations, Dave Lowry, about the process of outfitting a football player and some donors enjoyed trying on some football gear. Other guests were impressed by the intensity of the football lift program, designed by Director of Strength and Conditioning, Rob Phillips, while other donors were fascinated by Head Athletic Trainer Andy Massey's brief of the newest technology in athletic training, which allows athletes to recover faster from injuries and dehydration.
The Green Wave Football team opens its 2011 season on Saturday, September 3 at 2:30 p.m. against Southeastern Louisiana in the Louisiana Superdome.
