NEW ORLEANS - After just the second year back on the courts after Hurricane Katrina forced the suspension of the program, the Tulane men's tennis team is climbing back up to the prominence it once had.
The Green Wave earned a No. 9 ranking in the final Southern Regional Rankings by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA, while first-year player Idan Mark earned a No. 9 ranking in singles and joined Radu Ionescu for a No. 10 ranking in doubles.
"I'm delighted to see where we finished up this year, both regionally and nationally," head coach Mark Booras said. "This is a great indication of the direction our program is progressing. A year ago our team wasn't even in the top 15 regionally and we didn't have any individuals ranked in the top 20 regionally or nationally."
Tulane finished the 2011 spring season with an 11-11 overall dual match record, including five wins in the final seven matches of the season.
Individually, Mark, who earned the Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honor, posted a 12-7 dual match record in singles and collected a 15-5 doubles record that included a 7-2 record with Ionescu.
Mark also received a No. 103 final national ranking.
"These rankings should reinforce to our players that they are making a difference here at Tulane as they all lead us collectively towards our goals," Booras added. "They are starting to see some of the fruits of their labors while rebuilding this program from scratch, and we are looking forward to seeing even more progress next year."
The Green Wave posted a 7-3 home record at the Goldring Tennis Center and had five shutout wins during the spring, including two in the final week of the regular season.
