WILMINGTON, N.C. - Mother Nature was not invited to the opening day of the 2011 UNCW Invitational, but she showed up anyway and caused major problems to the scheduled events for the Tulane men's tennis team and the eight other teams at the new Althea Gibson Tennis Complex.
Two rain delays hampered the progress of the opening round and delayed the second rounds until late in the night.
Tulane's Idan Mark, the top seed of Flight A singles, Joe Young, Shaye Wali and Adam Bernstein each beat the weather and their respective opponents to advance into the second round to be played late Friday night.
Young joined Mark with a win in Flight A, while Wali and Bernstein advanced in Flight B.
The Green Wave also secured first-round wins by four of the five doubles teams on Friday morning. The pair of Mark and Young, the No. 3 seed in Flight A, while Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli also earned a Flight A doubles victory.
Etham Frenkel and Iain Sneddon teamed up for advance in Flight B, and joined Bernstein and Takuma Ohashi with opening round wins.
The second rounds of the single matches are scheduled for late Friday night, while doubles will be played Saturday morning. The tournament concludes Sunday.
