NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane women's tennis didn't need long to find their way back to the win column, as the Green Wave notched its fifth shutout victory of the season with a 7-0 decision against Penn today at the Sarni Tennis Center in University Park, Pa.
The Wave improved to 7-1 on the year and will face No. 59 Penn State on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. to conclude a three-match road swing. Penn, meanwhile, dropped to 3-3 on the year.
With temperatures on the high 20's on Saturday, the Green Wave played indoors for the first time this spring, but didn't miss a beat. Tulane swept through doubles to claim the all-important doubles point and made it a clean sweep with wins at each singles position.
Penn did make things interesting by taking three singles contests to a third set, but that was well after the Wave had clinched match point.
"We were very disappointed with Tuesday's loss on the road at LSU and I always look to see how we respond when we're coming off a loss, especially playing indoors on a fast surface," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "I thought the girls did a great job today. We don't play indoors very often so it was nice to come inside, play well and get a win."
In doubles play, senior Mariam Kurdadze and junior Emma Levy upped their record to 17-4 on the year with an 8-3 win over Penn's Alex Ion and Stephanie Do, 8-3, at the top spot, while the junior tandem of Caroline Thornton and Caroline Magnusson moved to 14-3 on the year with an 8-0 win over Jules Rodin and Srinidhi Raghavan at No. 2.
Finally, Tulane's undefeated duo of senior Lindsay Dvorak and junior Hila Elster remained perfect on the year at 13-0 with an 8-2 win over Emma Whitfield and Daniela DePaoli at No. 3.
In singles action, Magnusson was the first to finish and she gave TU a 2-0 lead with her, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Raghavan at No. 4 and, a short time later, Kurdadze put away Do, 6-3, 6-1, at the top spot to give the Wave a 3-0 lead. Dvorak clinched the match at No. 6 with her, 6-0, 6-2, win over Whitfield.
Playing No. 4 was Thornton, who easily won her first set, 6-0, Over DePaoli but dropped the second set 6-4 and edged her 7-6 (2) in the tiebreaker to claim the victory.
Levy got past Ion at No. 2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and sophomore Jenny Hois finished off the Quakers with her, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, win over Rodin at No. 5.
