Oct 19, 2014 | Men's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. - Chi-Shan Jao, a sophomore on the Tulane men's tennis team, claimed the consolation singles bracket title of the 2014 ITA Southern Regional with three wins on Sunday at Auburn University's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Jao, who won a pair of matches on Saturday to reach the quarterfinal round, defeated LSU's Simon Freund, 6-3, 6-4, to being play on Sunday. The Taipei City native then upended Louisiana-Lafayette's Damian Farinola, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals before getting past Alabama's Sean Donohue, 6-3, 6-4, in the consolation final in the later afternoon.
"What a tremendous effort this weekend by Jao," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "He was able to come back after a second round loss in the main draw and win six matches to win the consolation bracket. It takes a lot of focus and perseverance to put a string of matches like that together against tough opponents. We're real proud of him."
Jao improved to 10-3 in singles this fall, including his six wins in a row to complete the ITA Southern Regional.
Overall on the weekend, Tulane won 10 singles matches and a pair of doubles contests. In addition to Jao's 6-1 record, junior Alex Van Cott posted a 3-1 mark.
The Green Wave will next be in action on Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the USTA Futures Tournament held in Birmingham, Ala.
