Tulane Student-Athletes' Graduation Rate Ranks 12th in the Nation
Oct 30, 2014 | General
New Orleans - Tulane student-athletes have once again proven why they are one of the top groups in the country when it comes to performance in the classroom, as the Green Wave sports programs rank 12th in the nation for overall Graduation Success Rate (GSR) in all sports among the 128 FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) schools, according to the latest data released from the NCAA.
Tulane's GSR score of 90 trails only Notre Dame (99), Stanford (98), Duke (97), Northwestern (96), Boston College and Central Florida, each with a 95, Wake Forest (94), Miami and Rice each recorded a 92, while Alabama and Clemson each posted a 91.
Overall, more student-athletes than ever are earning degrees at Division I schools. The most recent GSR data, collected for student-athletes who entered college in 2007, show 84 percent graduated within six years. The rate is up 2 percentage points from the class that entered in 2006 and includes gains in virtually every demographic.
"These are fantastic results," Tulane Director of Athletics Rick Dickson said. "This validates the commitment and dedication of our student-athletes, coaches and particularly our academic services staff. Congratulations to all on a job well done."
Five Green Wave sports received a perfect GSR score of 100, including the men's and women's basketball teams, the men's cross country and track & field squads, women's golf, women's swimming & diving and volleyball.
The Tulane baseball squad sported an 89 percent rate, while the Wave's women's cross country & indoor and outdoor track & field squads came in with an 87 percent rate. The rate for TU football student-athletes was 85.
"Supporting student-athlete success in the classroom is at the heart of our Association, and today's announcement shows progress toward that goal that is nothing short of remarkable," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "We are delighted to see a record percentage of student-athletes achieve graduation, the ultimate goal of entering college."
Since the NCAA began tracking GSR with the class of student-athletes who entered in 1995, the overall rate has increased 10 percentage points, which translates to nearly 14,000 more graduates than if the rate had stayed the same. In that same time period, academic standards for Division I student-athletes improved multiple times, with increases in initial eligibility standards, progress-toward-degree standards and the creation of the Academic Progress Rate, a more real-time mechanism to track a student-athlete's academic success.
More information about the GSR report may be found at the NCAA's website.
