Tulane Game 8
Yulman Stadium
New Orleans, La.
Friday's game between Tulane and Cincinnati marked the first meeting between the two schools since 2002 and the 15th overall. Despite the loss, the Green Wave still hold an 11-4 advantage in the all-time series.
With the loss, the Green Wave fall to 2-6 on the year and 1-3 in American Athletic Conference play. Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 8, when they travel to The Lone Star State to play at Houston at 2:30 p.m. That game is slated to be televised live nationally on ESPNU.
With interceptions by redshirt-freshman CB Parry Nickerson and junior SS Darion Monroe, as well as a fumble recovery by senior TE Matt Marfisi following a muffed punt, Tulane has forced at least one turnover in all eight games so far in 2014 to bring the season total to 22. The Green Wave have now recorded at least one turnover in their last 17 games. The last time Tulane did not force a turnover came on Sept. 21, 2013 at Syracuse.
Freshman RB Dontrell Hilliard ran for a career-high 123 yards on 11 carries (11.2 avg), surpassing his previous career-best of 30 at Duke back on Sept. 20. Hilliard is the third running back to run for at least 100 yards, joining redshirt-freshman Sherman Badie and sophomore Lazedrick Thompson. The last time the Green Wave had at least three players run for 100 yards in the same season was 1998 when Toney Converse, Jamaican Dartez and Shaun King each eclipsed the century mark on the ground.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Tanner Lee made his return to the line-up after a two-game layoff due to injury and finished the day with 205 yards and a touchdown on 24-of-35 passing. His 10-yard touchdown pass to freshman TE Charles Jones with 4:48 in the third quarter was his ninth of the season, which ties the Tulane freshman record set by Ryan Griffin in 2009.
Lee now has 1,119 passing yards on the season, which is the second-most by a Tulane freshman. He moved past Shaun King, who had 1,046 yards in 1995, and is now 263 yards behind Griffin's rookie record of 1,382.
Lee did a good job of spreading the ball around as a season-high 10 receivers hauled in at least one pass against Cincinnati. The last time the Green Wave had double-digit players with at least one catch was Oct. 8, 2011, when 12 players had a catch vs Syracuse in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Six Tulane players had multiple-catch performances and each of them were freshmen. Teddy Veal led the way with career-high marks of seven catches and 73 yards, and Terren Encalade followed suit with five receptions for 41 yards. Also hauling in a pair of passes were TE Charles Jones for 25 yards and a touchdown, WR Leondre James for 14 yards, RB Sherman Badie for 10 yards and RB Dontrell Hilliard for eight yards.
The Green Wave defense allowed Cincinnati's Rod Moore and Mike Boone to rush for 124 and 113 yards, respectively. That marks the first time a Tulane opponent had more than one 100-yard rusher in the same game since McNeese State's Todd Pendland had 134 yards and Derrick Fourroux added 102 on Sept, 26, 2009, in the Superdome.
With just 1.0 tackle for loss against Cincinnati, Tulane saw its streak of 21 games with at least 4.0 stops behind the line of scrimmage snapped. The last time the Wave had less than 4.0 tackles for loss was on Nov. 17, 2012, when Tulane had one sack against East Carolina.
Tulane more than doubled its third-quarter scoring output on Friday, lighting up the scoreboard for 14 points on a 19-yard touchdown run by sophomore RB Lazedrick Thompson and a 10-yard touchdown pass from redshirt-freshman QB Tanner Lee to true freshman TE Charles Jones. Prior to tonight's game, Tulane had scored just 11 total points in the 15-minute period immediately following halftime.
Seven Tulane players extended their double-digit starting streaks on Friday against Cincinnati: junior SS Darion Monroe (33), junior CB Lorenzo Doss (30), senior FS Sam Scofield (21), junior LT Arturo Uzdavinis (21) and senior RT Sean Donnelly (19). In addition, three more players hit the 10-game starting streak mark: LB Nico Marley, OC Nathan Sheinle and RG Chris Taylor.
Tulane's game captains for Friday's contest against Cincinnati were redshirt-sophomore running back Lazedrick Thompson representing the offense, sophomore DT Tanzel Smart representing the defense and redshirt-junior LB Brandon Laborde representing the special teams.
Senior LB Matthew Bailey had the honor of carrying the No. 18 flag onto the field before Saturday's game. The flag has been a mainstay at Tulane football games in honor of Devon Walker, who suffered a career-ending spinal injury during the 2012 season which left him paralyzed.
