Coach Momic's Quotes Following Friday's Loss At Cincinnati
Nov 14, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
"For a big part of the match, we played very well and showed the way we are capable of playing. When we did that, we had some big leads - especially in game four. Unfortunately, we were not able to score when it mattered and it was a disappointing loss at the end. The important thing is that for most of the match we showed the talent that we have. It's just a matter of not being able to close. The girls learned that when they play well, we can create leads. We just have to learn how to close."
On how the fourth set unfolded
"Having up to 10 swings and nobody could score a point. Cincinnati was able to run a fast offense in transition, and our defense and blocking was not able to stop it. Pretty much, that was it. We weren't committing too many errors at that point, but we have to be more productive offensively - not being able to score points and not being able to stop Cincinnati when it mattered."
On who stood out in today's match
"Sarah Ray, Tea Juric and Sarah Strasner definitely showed their ability and their talent. Those are the players that we need to lead this team now and in the future. They absolutely have the ability to get better and better. We need to learn how to play as a team, keep the momentum and have the ability to score points or stop an opponent from scoring at will. We don't have that right now. We either have players who don't have enough experience or confidence at this point, but we definitely have the talent and we showed that today. We just have to figure out how to develop as a team, not only as individuals."
On sophomore Miah Diirell reclaiming the libero position
"It's between Miah and Kenzie [Frieden] right now. It's just depending on how they practice and what kind of serve-receive numbers they are able to produce. It's been kind of back and forth. I think Miah played well. Her serve receive was good for us today."
On the team being a play or two away from breaking through
"That's the way it works. We need to get over that last step and that threshold where we understand how to stop a couple of extra attacks or how to play a couple of extra balls. That's what it takes, but we're not there yet. We just have to figure out how to do it. We'll get a little bit more experience, a little bit more confidence and every player having a better understanding of the offense. We need to have a better first, second and third contact. We're close, but we're not there yet."
