TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Tulane women's tennis team wrapped its third and final fall tournament on Saturday evening, completing play at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic (RAFC), hosted by the University of Alabama. The Green Wave were scattered into six different singles draws and four doubles draws, consisting of eight competitors each from a total of 19 different participating schools. The RAFC was highlighted by an all Tulane final in the Jenny Whalen draw between Meredith Maltby and Kyla Klier.
On Friday, Kyla Klier and Meredith Maltby went 2-0 in singles each, setting up a showdown between the two in the Jenny Whalen draw. Klier earned a first round 6-3, 6-2, straight set victory over UAB's Amy Lowther, then downed Tennessee Chattanooga's Rachel Gazzola, 7-6(7), 6-4. Meanwhile, Maltby toughed out a third set super tiebreak to advance to the second round, besting Toni Ormond of Ball State, 6-2, 1-6, 10-5. Maltby then delivered a swift 6-3, 6-3 win over Samford's Carita Moolman.
In the final, Maltby claimed the first strike, taking the first set 6-4. Yet, with the match within reach for the Illinois native in the second, Klier dug deep and pulled out a 7-5 win, forcing a decisive third set. Then, experience got the upper hand, as the junior Maltby closed it out, 6-2.
"I consider it a great showing of our ability when two of our girls meet each other in the finals," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk stated. "Kyla and Meredith did a great job this weekend showing a lot of poise and fight to reach the finals and then the actual final itself was really good tennis, a three set battle with a lot of discipline from both players. Playing three doubles matches and three singles matches in the course of two days is quite taxing on the body, and also mentally so. The fact that they were able to end on such a quality match just reiterates what I have thought all along, that we are a very talented group with a lot of depth."
In addition, in true bounce back fashion, Vanessa Nommensen rallied after a first round loss Friday morning to earn two consecutive victories via straight sets. Nommensen downed Michigan's Kristy Dodge 6-0, 6-4, and then defeated Ball State's Courtney Earnest 6-4, 6-4, to take the consolation final crown in the Dominique Glinzler draw.
"Vanessa did a very nice job after losing her first round match to earn back-to-back wins," Sisk added. "Vanessa bounced back with a win over a player from Michigan and after losing her first round closely, it's nice to see that mental capacity to continue to grind and problem solve."
Ipek Birol , Naz Karagoz and Zoe Gaber added a singles victory to their name as well. Birol cruised past Elanor Grossman of Loyola Marymount, 6-1, 6-1, before falling to LSU's Noel Scott 6-3, 6-3. Next, Naz defeated Samford's Stephanie N'Tcha 6-3, 7-6(3), while Gaber earned her first victory with the Green Wave with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Audrey Marquard of Loyola Marymount.
"Overall, this fall we played three very tough tournaments and every tournament got better," Sisk concluded. "We didn't go to a tournament where we were just going to walk through the draws, we wanted to be pushed and even lose some matches to see where we needed work and how we dealt with adversity. I'm proud of my team and really am excited for the spring."
