NEW ORLEANS - Two days after helping the Tulane University swim team post its fastest meet of the season to date, Green Wave standout Mia Schachter was named American Athletic Conference Co-Swimmer of the Week for her performance over the weekend at the Pearland Invitational.
The junior from Arroyo Grande, Calif., Schachter claimed the distinction after setting school records in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 breast, and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the latter two events. She becomes the first Green Wave swimmer to claim The American's weekly honor and is the first member of the Tulane program to claim a league's Swimmer of the Week award since Kayla Alf-Huynh picked up Conference USA's honor back on Nov. 1, 2011.
A major factor in Tulane's second-place finish at the Pearland Invitational, Schachter posted individual wins in the 100 breast (1:00.24) and 50 free (22.90) while posting second-place showings in the 100 free (50.03). In addition, she helped the 400 free (3:23.93), 400 medley (3:43.07) and 200 medley (1:42.60) relay teams post second-place showings and the 800 free unit (7:33.59) finish fourth as the Green Wave finished second among the four participating teams.
Schacter's time in the 100 breast broke her own Tulane mark of 1:00.90 at last year's Conference USA Championship on Feb. 28, 2014, as was her mark in the 50 free, which tied her own record originally set the previous day at the C-USA Meet
Her time in the 100 free on the final day of the Pearland Invite was momentarily the third-fastest in Tulane history and the second-fastest showing of her collegiate career, but Schachter posted a 400 free relay leadoff split of 49.85 to move ahead of Linda McEachrane's 100 free record of 50.01 set on Feb. 26, 2005 at the C-USA Championship.
Schachter's effort in the relays helped the 400 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relay teams post the second-best times in school history in the respective events while the 800 free relay time sits fourth in the Green Wave annals and the 200 free relay showing ranks sixth in Tulane history.
With the fall portion of the 2014-15 season already in the books, Schachter and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, when they open the spring slate in Coral Gables, Fla., where Tulane will take on Rutgers and host Miami.
The Wave's next home meet is slated for Jan. 24 when the Wave play host to North Texas in the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium. Prior to the start of that contest, Tulane will honor the senior class of Morgan Evans, Molly Jubas, Vanessa Loewen, Amy Needham, Claire Schelske, and Laura Turpen with a special ceremony and admission is free.
