Koepfer Advances at USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships
Nov 6, 2014 | Men's Tennis
The Furtwangen, Germany, native will face 16th-ranked Dane Webb of Oklahoma on Friday. Webb defeated Andrew Watson of Memphis, 5-6, 7-5, 6-4, in Thursday's round of 32.
"Great job today by Dominik," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Norrie is one of the top ranked freshman this year and was top 10 in the world junior rankings. He has taken college tennis by storm this semester and will be a top 20 player for sure. All that being said, Dominik had his hands full but really stepped up to the challenge."
Koepfer opened the morning with a 6-4 win in the first set against TCU's Cameron Norrie, the seventh overall seed in the tournament. Norrie forced a third set with a thrilling 7-6 victory in the second set. Koepfer then was able to secure a 6-3 win in the third to advance and earn the right to play in Friday's second round.
"I was very pleased with how Dominik dealt with the adversity today," Booras added. "The match was full of ups and downs. After a good start and winning a tight first set he got down a break 4-1 in the second set. Dominik came all the way back to go up 6-3 in the tiebreaker. He ended up losing the second set after having a total of four match points and then got down a break in the third set.
"Needless to say he was in a tough position as the momentum had shifted again in the other guy's favor in a big way," Booras said. "But Dom kept on believing in himself and stuck to the task at hand to execute his game well under pressure down the stretch and come up with a win."
