NEW ORLEANS - A standout on the gridiron as well as in the classroom, Tulane football's senior safety Sam Scofield garnered second-team Capital One Academic All-America Division I Football Team recognition by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
A native of Lafayette, Louisiana, Scofield is a repeat honoree after garnering second-team All-America honors as a junior in 2013. In addition to his play on the field, Scofield sports a 3.77 cumulative grade point average as a finance major in Tulane's prestigious A.B. Freeman School of Business. The honor comes one month after he was named first-team Academic All-District 6.
In his fourth season with the Green Wave and his second as a starter, Scofield has been a constant on academic listings throughout his career as he claimed a spot on the 2013 Conference USA All-Academic Football Team and received the C-USA Academic Medal as a junior. In addition, he claimed C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and Tulane 3.0 Club honors in each of his first three collegiate seasons.
On the field, Scofield has played in 44 career games with 28 starts in the secondary where he has posted 248 tackles (166 solo, 82 assists), 16.0 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 12 pass break-ups, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and a trio of fumble recoveries.
As a senior, he has started all 11 games so far and leads the team with 89 tackles (58 solo, 31 assists) while ranking second with three interceptions, tied for third with one fumble recovery, tied for fourth with 1.0 sack and tied for fifth with 5.0 tackles for loss. Scofield ranks eighth in the American Athletic Conference in interceptions per game (0.27) and 11th in tackles per game (8.0), and those marks sit 67th and 87th nationally in the respective categories.
Scofield tallied a season-best 17 tackles (8 solo, 9 assists) with a tackle for loss at East Carolina on Nov. 22 and added 14 stops (11 solo, 3 assists) at Tulsa on Aug. 28. He pulled down interceptions vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 13, at Duke on Sept. 20 and at Houston on Nov. 8, and added a pair of pass break-ups in the home win against SLU.
Scofield and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6, when they close out the 2014 season against American foe Temple at 6:30 p.m. in Yulman Stadium.
