New Orleans, La.
Saturday's game marked the seventh meeting between Tulane and Southeastern Louisiana on the gridiron. With the win, the Green Wave are now 7-0 all-time against the Lions
Tulane's win over Southeastern Louisiana improved the Green Wave's record over NCAA Division I-Football Championship Subdivision opponents (formerly I-AA) to 12-0. Tulane previously defeated Chattanooga 33-19 on Sept. 3, 1998, Southern in 2001 and 2002, Northwestern State 27-24 on Sept. 9, 2003, Florida A&M 39-19 on Sept. 11, 2004, McNeese State 42-32 on Sept. 26, 2009, the Lions 28-21 on Oct. 1, 2005, 35-27 on Sept. 22, 2007, 27-21 on Sept. 2, 2010 and 47-33 on Sept. 3, 2011, and Jackson State 34-7 last Aug. 29, 2013.
The game against the Lions marked Tulane's first night game on campus since hosting Kentucky on Nov. 2, 1974 in old Tulane Stadium. The contest also marked the first time the Green Wave hosted an in-state opponent since defeating then-Southwestern Louisiana (now Louisiana-Lafayette) 17-16 on Sept. 14 of that same year.
The 58 rushing yards by Southeastern Louisiana were the fewest allowed by the Green Wave defense on the season and the least since giving up 49 against UTEP on Nov. 23, 2013.
With a pair of interceptions by senior FS Sam Scofield and sophomore WLB Nico Marley, as well as a fumble recovery by senior CB Tauren Nixon, Tulane has forced multiple turnovers in all three games so far in 2014 to bring the season turnover total to eighth. The Green Wave have now recorded multiple-turnover contests in their last 12 games. The last time Tulane did not have a multiple-turnover game defensively came on Sept. 21, 2013 at Syracuse.
The Green Wave defense had at least four tackles for loss for the third time in as many games in 2014 with eight stops behind the line of scrimmage for 33 yards in losses. It was the most tackles for loss by the Green Wave this season, as was Tulane's three sacks. The Wave have now tallied at least four tackles behind the line of scrimmage in each of the last 17 games dating back to the 2012 season finale. The last time Tulane had less than four tackles for loss was on Nov. 17, 2012, when the Green Wave had one sack against East Carolina.
Redshirt-freshman QB Tanner Lee recorded his third multiple-touchdown game in as many career games, tossing three scoring strikes against the Lions. Lee is the first Green Wave signal caller to have multiple touchdown passes in his first three starts since then-sophomore Patrick Ramsey in 1999 when he had two at Southern Miss on Sept. 6, three vs SMU on Sept. 11 and four vs Army on Sept. 18.
With eight touchdown passes so far in 2014, Lee is just one scoring strike away from setting the Tulane freshman record for touchdown tosses in a season. The record of nine is held by Ryan Griffin in nine games back in 2009.
With an 11-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a three-yard touchdown reception in the third, redshirt-freshman running back Sherman Badie recorded the first multiple-score game of his young career. Badie becomes the first Tulane player to score on the ground and through the air since Rob Kelley did so against UTEP on Nov. 23, 2013.
Badie finished the game with 82 all-purpose yards, including an 80-yard rushing effort on 15 carries. For the season, he has now run for 310 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries and is averaging 9.4 yards per tote.
Senior WR Xavier Rush's 76-yard touchdown catch with 11:27 to play in the ballgame was the longest play of his career. His previous long was a 62-yard scoring strike vs Rice on Nov. 13, 2012.
Rush's score was his third of the season and the 12th of his career. He moves into sole possession of 14th place in school history in career touchdown catches, moving ahead of Tristan Smith (2001-03), Jeff Liggon (1993-96) and Robert Griffin (1980-83).
Junior CB Lorenzo Doss posted a career-high seven tackles (5 solo, 2 assists) against the Lions. His previous career-best tackle performances was six on five occasions: all solo vs UL-Lafayette on Oct. 6, 2012; 4 solo, 2 assists at UTEP on Oct. 20, 2012; 3 solo, 3 assists vs UAB on Oct. 27, 2012; 4 solo, 2 assists vs Rice on Nov. 3, 2012; and 3 solo, 3 assists at Rice on Nov. 30, 2013.
Seven Tulane players extended their double-digit scoring streaks on Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana: junior SS Darion Monroe (28), junior CB Lorenzo Doss (17), senior FS Sam Scofield (16), junior OL Arturo Uzdavinis (16) and senior WR Justyn Shackleford (14) and senior OL Sean Donnelly (14).
A pair of Tulane student-athletes made their first collegiate starts on Saturday against the Lions as sophomore Edward Williams opened the game at middle linebacker while true freshman Charles Jones, II lined up as one of two tight ends to take the field on offense. The duo is two of 25 players who have made their first collegiate starts to date in 2014.
Tulane's game captains for Saturday's contest against Southeastern Louisiana were senior WR Xavier Rush representing the offense, junior SS Darion Monroe representing the defense and sophomore DS Michael Lizanich representing the special teams.
